In the 1980's several
hundred Laotian refugees resettled in Zion's
neighborhood. Our church reached out to these new
neighbors and over 200 were served in various church
outreach programs. They began to inquire about the
Christian faith. A Laotian Bible/membership class
was formed which led to many new Christians being
baptized in the faith. In 1992 one of the Laotians
was ordained as a Lutheran pastor and joined the
staff of our church.
In 2004 he was sent by
our church as a missionary to Laos. Our church
continues to have many Laotians who worship with us
each week. A Bible class is held each Sunday morning
in the Lao language. Our Laotian choir sings at
services each month. Our Laotian members meet for
food and fellowship each week. The children, who
almost all, speak English, participate fully in the
weekly programs for our children and youth at the
church.
Mr. Khammay "Mike"
Thammavongsa assists our pastors and staff with
meeting social service needs of our Lao members. Mr.
Sila Sonthixay is the president of the Zion Lao
Ministry committee. Bible class in the Lao language
meets on Sundays at 9:30 am in the Chapel. Small
group fellowships meet at 6:30 pm on Fridays in
various homes or in the church Fellowship Hall.
We welcome all to
find a church home at Zion!
